WWE Hall of Famer Amy Dumas giving back to next generation of female wrestlers

JOPPA, Md. – For Jessika Heiser, a big reason she decided to become a professional wrestler came on Dec. 6, 2004.

It was on that date that she saw a WWE Raw episode in which two females – Lita and Trish Stratus – wrestled each other in the main event. Unlike many matches involving females, the pair performed many high risk maneuvers, including dives from the rink to the concrete floor.

Heiser said she knew that she wanted to one day follow their path into the ring; something the 23-year-old has accomplished as a regular with Maryland Championship Wrestling.

“At the time, I thought how kick [butt] it was for women to be rocking the main event of the night, but I appreciate it so much more now that I’m trying to get there,” said Heiser, known as Jessie Kaye in MCW.

Heiser didn’t realize at the time just how similar a path she would follow compared to one of the wrestlers in that match.

Lita was lying in a hammock at her home in Nicaragua when she got a text from Stephanie McMahon.

“Yeah, I was just chillin’ when I received this message from Steph saying the office was trying to get a hold of me,” Lita told SLAM! Wrestling this past week.

“I’m pretty out of touch when I’m down there, and I guess they were trying to call me. Steph didn’t say what it was about, so I called the office and they asked me if I would accept the honour of being in the Hall of Fame. So that was pretty exciting.”

She was not your typical Diva.

Lita was gorgeous and athletic, for sure, but she was also a tattooed bad girl whose punk-rock aesthetic perfectly captured the Attitude Era’s edgy allure.

Success did not come overnight for Amy Dumas. Before she became Lita, she travelled solo to Mexico City to learn the craft of wrestling from luchadors.

When fame (and infamy) came in WWE — thanks partly to risque storylines culled from messy real-life romances, and partly due to some outstanding matches — she was a show-stealer whose eventual Hall of Fame induction seemed assured.

With that induction now just around the corner, WhatCulture caught up with Lita for an exclusive chat about wrestling, her post-WWE life and, of all things, vegan cheese.

Interview: Amy talks Hall of Fame, WWE Diva’s Divsion, more

Amy Dumas is better known to WWE fans as Lita, a high-flying risk taker who helped revolutionize women’s wrestling along with Trish Stratus.

As a multi-time champion, successful manager and trailblazer, it’s no wonder the popular performer was chosen for induction into the WWE Hall of Fame on the eve of WrestleMania 30. The Fort Lauderdale native initially got the good news laying in a hammock at her house on the beach in Nicaragua.

“[WWE Chief Brand Officer] Stephanie McMahon was texting with me,” Dumas said. “She was feeling me out telling me the office has been trying to get in touch with me. She asked if I could call the office. She was doing the whole talking to me as a friend, but being a little vague.

“She said, ‘The office just has something they would like to talk to you about. I believe that it’s regarding WrestleMania. So maybe it’s the weekend surrounding it? I’m not really sure, so just give them a call.’ I was like, ‘All right weirdo. Sure.’ Then I called, and they asked me if I would accept the honor of being in their Hall of Fame.”
